Soil Blockers
In 2020 when I first started planting seeds in earnest I used the below seed trays and last year (2021) when I ramped up and started planting seeds like a mad crazy woman – packets and packets at a time – I decided that the small trays… were just not really working for me for various reasons… I will do a more in-depth round up of equipment I have trialled for you.

Above seed trays are about £4 for 5 trays from most garden centres and stores… You can get other brands at varying prices.
So I began to look into alternative methods and solutions – I decided on 2 other options that I felt I would like to try out and see how I got on…
One was the coir pods Jiffy 7 Preloaded Trays | Organic Peat Compost Pellets (elixirgardensupplies.co.uk) these are the ones I ordered some in the trays and extra of just the jiffy pods as you can use them without the trays. I have done a post on seed sowing in them here Sown Seeds Feb ’22 – Cactus Girl
The other option I looked into were Soil Blockers last year I decided that I wanted something quick and easy with little mess hence I went with the coir pods – this year I am sowing even more seeds and have gone with the soil blocker – first off I ordered the Micro Blocker Soil Blockers – Micro 20 – Ladbrooke Soil Blockers I then used the recipe for the soil mix from my Instagram buddy Kimberly’s Cut Flowers (@my_scottish_garden) • Instagram photos and videos (she has a stories video under Soil Blockers where she shows how to do / use it and what recipe she uses). There are many other recipes out there – so you may want to research what you feel would work best for you… I have just ordered now the mini 4 with dowels and cube inserts to bump up the micro ones once the seeds have grown in size.
Here are some pictures I took of me setting up mine…
